April Fools Day Dev Jokes
- Omnitrap is a myth arising from an April's Fools Day news post in 2011. Crafting the trap required a wild goose, alluding to a "wild goose chase" (a futile search or fruitless errand, a task inordinately complex relative to its outcome). The image of the Omnitrap appears to be a combination of all weapons known to date.
- April Fools Day 2010 news post contained sneak peeks for allegedly Invis-o-trap of DOOOOM and a Stealth Mouse. The attached images had the silhouettes of the later-released Gorgon Trap and Eclipse Mouse, only seen when placing the image on a colored background. "Eclipse Mouse silhouette."). Stealth Mouse was eventually added to the game.
Hunter Perpetrated Myths
Flawed strategies
- Purchasing a large amount of cheese to keep gold 'safe'
- Having zero gold does not 'block' a mouse from stealing a hunter's gold. If the hunter has zero gold, the mouse will steal the equivalent amount or more in cheese.
- Changing traps or bases will increase the chance of catching different kinds of mice; it "changes things up and resets your luck."
- This is a very widely used strategy. Hunters have been trying this since the game's inception. The classical example is if you have an unlucky streak (lots of red boxes or misses), switch traps. Your unlucky streak will end. Developer Dave Vanderburg has stated there is no truth to this myth. [bias] may cause a player to interpret the random variation as a change in luck.
- A location swap will help to increase odds of catching mice; it changes your "D.H.U." factor
- Some hunters believe that if they are having bad luck in a certain area, traveling away and back again will improve the chances of successfully catching mice.
- Weapon/Base setup has an effect on which mice you attract
- No weapon or base will ever increase or decrease your chance to attract a specific mouse, with the following exceptions:
- Mystic Pawn Pincher and Technic Pawn Pincher increase the attraction rate of their respective sides in Zugzwang's Tower.
- Magnet Base in Iceberg increases the attraction rate of Tunnel Rats, while Hearthstone Base decreases the attraction rate of Zealot mice.
- "I caught a Shelder Mouse with a Net Cannon, that must be the best set up to attract it!" Certain trap setups may increase your chances of catching a specific mouse, but they do not change the chances of that mouse appearing.
- Shadow type traps attract Shadow type mice. The use of Radioactive Blue in the Mousoleum or Gnarled Cheese in the Lagoon is the only way to attract the shadow mice in those locations.
- Using Water Jet Charms changes the zone distribution in Sunken City and makes certain zones appear less frequently.
