Redo?
Who's in for a major redo of this page once all the levels are released? :P Or we can separate the mice right now into known levels and then the rest in an "unreleased" list or something. owww my brain hurts. Victor.Songtalk 05:40, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- I was thinking of waiting until we have more info (all levels released) just to make it easier to settle on a final version. --niehusa 05:56, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Now that the KG has been fully released, do we still want to redo this page? (I do.) My proposal is that, for ease of navigation, linking, and reading, we should split up the Mice section, and within each include some of the info from the strategy section. So it would look something like this for each of the 8 Tiers — here's T6, for example:
=== Tier 6 ===
Theme: Noble
Bait Preference: Gauntlet Cheese Tier 6
Primary Weakness: Arcane
Loot Dropped: Gauntlet Potion Tier 7
Mouse | Points | Gold |
---|---|---|
Paladin | 25,200 | 2,500 |
Sacred Shrine | 19,500 | 9,000 |
White Mage | 20,400 | 9,000 |
Directly under the Mice heading, before launching into the subheads, we'd explain that every floor has a theme, all the mice on a floor drop that floor's loot, etc. So… thoughts? --GoBecky 23:20, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
- I like this a lot! One tiny concern is that people wouldn't be able to compare all the mice in this location together in terms of points/gold. Anyway, I think it's more useful to split them up like this. -- camomiletea 00:30, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I thought about that, not being able to compare *all* the mice at once. Personally, I kinda feel that since you can't actually hunt for, say, a Stealth and a Cowbell and a Paladin at the same time, comparing them is almost moot. I think of the floors as separate locations, you know? But there could be some reason someone wanted to see all the mice together… I don't know. I think that that's outweighed by what we'd gain in terms of linking, etc, and just that it'd be so much easier to read… but that's based on how I use the wiki, you know? Maybe in that little explanatory paragraph, a note that mice increase in points and gold at each floor. (Or if there's enough need for it, a subpage with that table could be added… like King's Gauntlet/All Mice.)
- Any other comments/additions/etc? I'd be happy to do the work, just don't want to do it prematurely. :)
- Oh, and camomiletea — thanks for keeping track of the floor themes! --GoBecky 15:51, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- I only missed the first tier theme. It's either Toy or Puppet. I didn't see that banner for the first tier, and the news post didn't mention the theme. -- camomiletea 16:46, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the formatting changes, I totally agree that there was too much white space, but I never would have thought of that solution — it's brilliant! --GoBecky 11:30, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
Mice Group
I think that the column titled Mice Group is not helpful, when all the mice are in the same group. I propose getting rid of this column, and putting in a narrative that says the mice here are Gauntlet Gladiators. -- camomiletea 17:12, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, that column does look rather repetitive (on both this article and others) now. Perhaps we could make it a Bait Pref column instead (for when there are more tiers)? --Dreamwalker 17:34, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- Regarding that, I think it would be better to have a column for Tiers (e.g. Tier 1, Tier 2, etc.), which should be the default sorting order, rather than alphabetical. Then in the strategy section we can discuss the details about bait preferences and anything else relevant to the particular Tier. -- camomiletea 17:46, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
- Went ahead with this idea, wondering what everyone thinks. I don't know how to make the default sort by tier, so I left it as it was. --niehusa 22:08, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Tier 2?
How is it that some of the mice in this article are already listed as being in Tier 2 of the King's Gauntlet? It was my understanding that Tier 2 is not yet open, and as such we couldn't possibly know which mice will or will not appear in this tier. Unless someone can explain how we know this, I propose we remove the "Tier 2" references for the moment until Tier 2 is actually released. —MearsMan talk 04:45, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
- Some Tier 2 cheese was released as a glitch, rather than getting the potion, they got the cheese. Some hunters then used the tier 2 cheese to catch tier 2 mice, that is why they are listed as such. --niehusa 07:16, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
Weakness/Strategy
Not sure howI feel about having "Weakness" be part of the table. Perhaps for the time being, until all the Tiers are released and we can reorganize, it'll be ok. But as we all are well aware by now, the 'stated' weakness of the Tiers is not their only weakness; most folks I know (who were without a 2010) blew through T3 with a Chillbot. Perhaps when we reorganize, each Tier can have a templated box/list with the bait pref, "theme", loot dropped, and stated trap weakness (or pehaps we should call it "primary weakness") with a note in the strategy section generally discussing that while each tier has a primary weakness, it's just one factor to consider in choosing one's trap. --GoBecky 00:06, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- I think either "Stated" or "Primary" would be safe, but the current "Weakness" isn't incorrect either. A short note may suffice. At the end of the day, HVMT still beats Chillbot at Tier 3; that Chillbot is sufficient is a testament to the power of that trap in particular, not of its type. --Hyperchao 07:27, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- I'm just going on the precedent set by others when I suggested adding a similar parameter to the individual mouse pages after Longtail came out. At the lower tiers at least, it's still a question of strategy; do you go with the Chillbot for higher luck/more loot, or a Tactical because it's the stated weakness? You're right that it's not 'incorrect' to label it "Weakness," but I think we do a disservice by implying it's the 'only' weakness. Which is what the strategy section does now: '"...their vulnerability to other power types is unknown but it is reasonable to conclude that they resist most or all."' I haven't gotten around to testing T2 with every power type, but I did accidentally leave my HVMT equipped for a few hunts and had no problem. I don't have time right now to reword that section, but to me it's the main sticking point. As long as we're clear there that power type is (as in most places in Longtail) just one factor to consider, then the table heading isn't 'as' important. I can work on all this in a few hours, though… --GoBecky 14:17, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- I've removed the Weakness column. The weaknesses (along with other relevant information to tier such as bait prefs, theme, etc.) should be discussed in strategy narrative. Becky makes some good points above, such as the fact that you can catch these mice with more than one type of trap, and the consideration of luck for the potions... -- camomiletea 18:48, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- My thought on creating this was to give a graphical view of the standard trap type used to catch the mice in a tier. While I agree with all the above info, I still think that many people are confused as to which type of traps they should be using to catch any particular mouse (in any area, not just this one.) When all else fails I tend to look for the simplest explanation and let the details fall as they may. For newer hunters, and this is where I mainly keep my focus, my thought is to give them the standard power type used for that tier, and let the more advanced players take note that traps of another power type may also work due to some outstanding quality of a particular trap. I also take to admins word as canon; "Bards can be quite wily, so using a strong tactical trap will help the aspiring hunter stay on-key." So in my mind, their weakness is tactical, no matter what other weaknesses may also exist. --niehusa 02:59, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
Minimum rank?
It's just occurred to me, that even though the minimum rank for the gauntlet is "Apprentice" on the travel page, a hunter needs a minimum rank of "Initiate" to get to the gauntlet. Due to the floor-plans being obtained in the Harbour, which is now open for Initiate or higher, it's impossible for anyone ranked Apprentice to actually get to the Gauntlet unless they received the plans prior to the rank change. Any idea how to build this into the article? Draobyek 13:57, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
- I mentioned this on the Location Quick Reference page a couple days ago, and I sent the devs a feedback ticket this morning. For now, I vote to list it as Initiate with a disclaimer that it is officially listed as Apprentice in-game but cannot be reached until Initiate, like the one I put on the Location Quick Reference page. I'm assuming the devs will fix the problem soon enough, and we can remove the disclaimer at that point. --Dreamwalker 18:03, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
Aquos Loot: Need Clarification
The newly released T5 Aquos mouse is listed in the table as dropping &5 (not T6) potions. Is this a typo, or a new twist in the Gauntlet mechanics? Im unable to confirm myself, but I think it's fairly urgent to get sorted. --GoBecky 17:52, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
- I'm assuming a typo. One of my friends had a drop from Aquos, and it was Tier 6 potion. I'll be on the lookout if the oddity appears on the forum, though... -- camomiletea 18:54, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
