King's rewards affecting Rank Progression
Looking at the description of the rank progression now, I think we need some information either ways whether points from the various avenues other than mice catches (ie point loot, king's reward) actually affects it.
I know that it used to be a factor in rank progression, because in April 2008 when I first started playing, I ranked up on a horn call with a failed to attract. However that was when rank progression was based on a fixed value, which they changed not too long after into one that took in many more factors.
It'd be good if anyone can point to information that will settle the issue. In the meantime leave it as describing not, since it won't really make a difference how people play the game anyways. -- Grexx 09:23, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
- Dave Vanderburg could speak authoritatively on this (and likely would have changed it or made a comment here, as he has done with other inaccurate info). I feel I've bothered him with enough wiki questions for the time being, but if someone else wants to ask him for his input I don't think it would be out of line. :-) -- B.Rossow talkcontr 13:44, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
I've found rules for the rank progress. I've monitored my progress and king's rewards and even loot such as "Lab Research worth X bonus points" is not taken into account. What is? Here are the rules I've found:
- There are some base rank points depending on your current Rank (Apprentice=0.1%; Journeyman=0.08%; Master=0.03% - this is not exact)
- You get only base points when you don't catch a mouse in your hunt (and that means that your cheese went stale, or mouse wasn't attracted or even that the mouse grabbed the cheese and run away).
- Every points you earn for a mouse are multiplied by some factor and added to base rank points. The factor is also different on every Rank. For the Master rank the factor is somewhere around 0,000115 - yes, this is not much!
- Final, but also most important thing is that on your hourly hunts you only get half of your rank progress!
So e.g. for the Master rank Rank progression may be found from this formula:
0.03 + [points for the catch] * 0.000115
Note, that there are some hunts that might give you a little more or a little less progression. I think there is some random number added at the end of the formula. --Nux 10:21, 26 October 2009 (UTC) PS: Use this knowledge wisely ;-)
Category
I think that this page would be better categorised as Terminology rather than Gameplay. Are others of the same opinion? I think the Gameplay box on the homepage looks a little cluttered and this small change would help. --Le6o 01:06, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
Offsite links needed
Noticed the rank shields are linked to the MH servers. Can someone make the necessary changes by uploading it somewhere else and linking the image. Thanks! -- Grexx 05:59, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Brackets & Clarity
I think some things need to be made slightly clearer.
1) "mouse_factor * points_for_mouse + base_points" I think brackets should be introduced as multiplying first gives a lower answer than adding first. Mathmatically you should multiply first.
2) "Rank advancement formula when a hunter is going on a hunt" Does this include when someone goes on a hunt for you (because they are in the same area)? This could be cleared up either with: "Rank advancement formula when a hunter sounds their own horn" or "Rank advancement formula when a hunter has their horn sounded by anyone", or something along those lines. - Ad.1) The formula is mathematically correct, no need for brackets.
- Ad.2) I believe this is clarified in the "Rank Advancement" section, but I guess it might be put in clearer words. Still, there are only two formulas of which one is for hourly trap checks, so the other one is for any other.

- As mentioned by Dave in his reply here, it is a reasonably close estimate. Apparently they have changes planned on the scoring system, so it'll probably be updated as and when they get the coding done. In the meantime, I'd like to give my appreciation to Nux for expanding on the article and making things a little clearer :) -- Grexx
Additional Columns
As the 'Description' column is getting quite crowded, I'm thinking of adding columns to move the information currently contained within the 'Description' column out. I'm planning on including a location column, which will detail the various locations and regions that a rank can access above the earlier ranks. Also thinking of adding a potions column, which will mention which potions have increased potency. Will also remove the prerequisites of each location being mentioned as it adds unnecessary bulk to the description. Let me know your comments on this, especially if there could be any more helpful things that can be included, or perhaps they should all be removed, leaving a simple description of the shield. -- Grexx 19:23, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
- Good idea. I was thinking to add a crafting column (linked to crafting and saying something like "1 slot" or "unavailable")?... But I think it could be even greatly refactored. Columns would be: Rank, Locations, Shield, Additional abilities. The last one would mention pretty much everything that didn't previous ones. For example:
Rank | New locations | Shield | Additional abilities |
---|---|---|---|
Novice | Town of Gnawnia, Meadow | white shield | None except for sounding the horn. |
Apprentice | Harbour | yellow shield | Acquires crafting abilities (1 slot), may begin accumulating Stale Cheese, and may participate in Tournaments. |
Lord/Lady | N/A | Lady - black shield with a pink outline and a pink bullseye in the center Lord - black shield with a blue outline and a pink bullseye in the center |
Further bonus when using potions and an additional crafting slot (they are the lowest rank which can presently safely make every crafting recipe that exists). |
- BTW. I think the Donor rank should be described below the table to make things a bit clearer. --Nux 12:42, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Rank up images
Anyone interested in keeping the images we receive on our journals when we receive a new title? I just got Count. --Hyperchao 03:58, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
- I've been saving them from seeing some of my friends rank up etc. [1] Not sure if I'm still missing something... One thing to note is that the image for Lord would now be different with the two new areas in Rodentia. -- camomiletea 04:48, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
- Even if we don't save the images, the text of the rank up journal entries would be nice to list in the wiki. And listing the journal entry renders some of the existing description redundant. Then there's Larry's descriptions, but listing both journal entry and Larry's text can get repetitive. For an example:
Rank | Journal Entry | Larry's Summary | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Recruit
|
I received the title of Recruit! I have been officially recruited by the King to hunt! I can now hunt in the Town of Gnawnia. I'm really getting the hang of this! |
- You can hunt at the Town of Gnawnia. - You can hunt in 2 of 29 locations in the Kingdom. |
The rank of Recruit is signified by a white shield with a vertical grey line down the middle (link) next to the player's name. |
Initiate
|
I received the title of Initiate! I can now hunt at the Harbour. I can now hunt at the King's Gauntlet. I can now craft items! |
- You can hunt at the Harbour and the King's Gauntlet. - You can combine 2 items while crafting. - You can hunt in 5 of 29 locations in the Kingdom. |
Initiates may begin accumulating Stale Cheese. The rank of Initiate is signified by a yellow shield with a vertical black line down the middle (link) next to the player's name. |
- The descriptions in this article are more thorough than either the rank up journal entries or the Larry's info, because it mentions when playing may begin accumulating stale cheese, or when they can collect potions. I like the idea of collecting the rank-up journal entries, but Larry's info is definitely redundant - maybe we can just link to that page in the end (make a See Also section).
- Unrelated but something that's been bugging me a little are those "(link)" bits. For accessibility reasons, I'd like to see that links are actually made from the relevant phrase, such as in the example above, it would be "The rank of Initiate is signified by a yellow shield with a vertical black line down the middle next to the player's name."-- camomiletea 18:12, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
