Food in the desert is so scare that there is fierce competition between mice over it. Watch out for the vicious grublings in this area, who hoard food and Garden Essences like no other mouse! |
Overview
Sand Dunes is a hunting location in Sandtail Desert region.
Living Garden, Lost City, Sand Dunes, Twisted Garden, Cursed City, and Sand Crypts are 6 connected hunting locations, forming the Living Garden complex.
They require the minimum rank of Baron/Baroness and the Living Garden Key to access.
Sand Dunes can only be traveled to when the Hunter's map is in Normal state.
Normal World and Twisted World
At a time, among 6 hunting locations in the Living Garden complex, only 3 can be traveled to. This depends on whether the Hunter's map is in Normal or Twisted state:
- Normal state: Living Garden, Lost City, and Sand Dunes are accessible
- Twisted state: Twisted Garden, Cursed City, and Sand Crypts are accessible
The map state can be changed from Normal to Twisted by:
- Catching a Carmine the Apothecary in Living Garden
- Doing so will generate a journal entry:
- On catching Carmine the Apothecary, a light flashes and a spell she had prepared in advance erupts! Nightmarish tendrils of dark smoke burst from the ground around me, and before I knew it the world had changed before my very eyes into a wild and twisted version of itself.
- I can feel this world itself attempting to reject me and send me back, but I must stay as long as I am able to find out what Carmine is doing in this hidden, dark place.
The map state can be changed from Twisted to Normal by either:
- Using any cheese other than Duskshade Camembert or Lunaria Camembert in Twisted Garden
- Using any cheese other than Graveblossom Camembert in Cursed City
- Using any cheese other than Graveblossom Camembert in Sand Crypts
- Doing any of the actions above will generate a journal entry:
- Almost as if an illusion suddenly shattered, the world around me snaps back to normal. Using X Cheese has brought me back to the normal world.
The Living Garden Sequence
In the Living Garden complex, the Hunter follows 6 main steps in sequence.
Step 2b can be done in Sand Dunes.
Grubling Stampede Minigame
In Sand Dunes, the Grubling Stampede mechanics are in effect:
- The Stampede state can be Active or Inactive.
- The state is Inactive when the Hunter visits Sand Dunes for the first time.
- The state has a chance to be changed from Inactive to Active after every hunt.
- This chance can be boosted to 100% upon catching a mouse by arming a Grubling Bonanza Charm.
- When the Stampede activates, it generates a journal entry:
- It's a stampede! Grubling Mice are running wild for 15 more hunts!
- The state will change back to Inactive after 15 hunts in Sand Dunes.
- When the Stampede ends, it generates a journal entry:
- Aw, the Grubling stampede is over. Next time, Grublings!
- I guess Grubling Chow Charms won't be needed until the next stampede!
- When the Stampede state is Active, arming Grubling Chow Charm will add Grubling Mouse to attraction pool.
Heads-Up Display
The Hunter can access and track the following in the HUD:

Hunting Strategy
Hunting Tips by Larry
I hope you managed to build up a large collection of Dewthief Camembert, hunter. The mice in these dunes don't seem to like anything else! And be sure to arm your most powerful Shadow trap, as not only will delicious Dewthief attract the mice, but so will the promise of shade from the sun.
There's a lot of competition for food here in the empty desert, and the top competitor is the Grubling Mouse. They dash from food source to food source, gobbling up anything they can find when they get there.
You can take advantage of this by purchasing and using Grubling Chow Charms when there's a grubling warning in effect. Catching Grublings will help you immensely, since they tend to hoard Garden Essences in their attempts to find food.
Or is there perhaps a more sinister reason...?
